Corné’s career in sales began at the age of 15 – selling to spaza stores in Kimberley during the 1980’s. After studying accounting, he was employed at PEP – then a struggling retailer weighed down by an identity crisis. The succeeding 16 years are now part of South African retail history. Besides transforming the South African retail landscape, Pepkor soon rolled out a string of enterprises into the rest of Africa, Europe and Australasia by focusing determinedly on “what a customer values”.
